Conference: Europe in Action 2013 - Ageing people with intellectual disabilities and their families
Jue, 30/05/2013 - Sáb, 01/06/2013
Inclusion Europe will hold its annual conference from 30.05-01-06.2013 in Ljubljana Slovenia. This year the focus will be on the challenges faced by ageing persons with intellectual disabilities and their families. The conference is organized in collaboration with Zveza Sožitje, the Slovenian National Association of People with Intellectual Disabilities and their Families, which celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Due to an increasing life-span, the number of older persons with intellectual disabilities and their ageing families is expected to grow sharply. The policy consequences of this have to be scrutinized with utmost care in order to prevent double discrimination against people with intellectual disabilities as the organizers underline.
The 2013 ‘Europe in Action’ conference will carefully analyse the inherent challenges of active ageing with an intellectual disability and facilitate the exchange of good practices to address the support needs of seniors with intellectual disabilities.
Building upon experiences from different European countries, the conference seeks to define inclusive policies needed to ensure that seniors with intellectual disabilities and their ageing families can maintain an appropriate quality of life within their communities.
The conference will thus address five fields of interest:
- 1. The ageing and old people with intellectual disabilities.
- 2. Ageing families with intellectually disabled members.
- 3. Meeting needs for services adjusted to seniors.
- 4. Programs of activities adjusted to seniors.
- 5. Policies in the field of quality of life of seniors with intellectual disabilities and their families.
Supported by simultaneous interpretation in English and Slovenian, self-advocates, family members, professionals and other experts from many European countries will present their experiences and discuss inclusive policies for ageing people with intellectual disabilities.
In addition to the Conference, Inclusion Europe will organise the following side events:
- • Strategic Policy Seminar for Leaders of the Inclusion Movement on CRPD Monitoring on 29 May 2013
