Conference "Making education inclusive" in Johannesburg, South Africa

The Southern African Association for Learning and Educational Differences (SAALED) in association with the Unesco Chair in Teacher Education for Diversity and Development at the Wits School of Education announces its bienniel conference to be held in Johannesburg from 1 – 6 July 2013. The conference focuses on the the theme “Making education inclusive by identifying and dismantling exclusionary pressures and practices in education” and is divided into a Research Symposium (1st - 3rd July), a Regional ministerial conference (3rd - 4th July) and a Professional development conference (4th – 6th July).
In the Research symposium students, academics and researchers from more than ten countries across 5 continents are invited to attend plenary sessions, round tables, research workshops and paper presentations on current and completed research on the themes of:
· Identifying and addressing exclusionary pressures, policies and practices in education
· The resources and re-organisation of schools required to address educational exclusion
· Teacher education for social justice, inclusion and diversity
· Research-based institutional and classroom strategies to make education inclusive

During the Regional ministerial conference representatives from Ministries of Education from the Southern African Development Community will offer input into a draft strategy for Inclusive Education for Children with Disabilities and sign a communiqué for a regional strategy for Inclusive Education.
The Professional development conference will include various plenary and workshop sessions presented by invited local and international speakers to equip teachers and therapists to meet diverse learning needs. Invited speakers are Dr. Kiki Messiou (University of Southampton), Richard Rieser (UK Disabled Peoples Movement representative at United Nations and European Disability Forum, consultant to UNICEF on the global REAP Project Educating teachers for children with disabilities), Stephanie Gottwald (Research Co-ordinator at the Centre for Reading and Language Research at Tufts University, USA), Dr. Loretta Giorcelli (specialist consultant for schools, government, NGOs, private agencies and parent groups) and Frances Browne (Advisor, Australia).
