The conference “Developing community based support for people with intellectual disability: working in partnership to achieve change,” taking place on November 15, 2013 in Prague (CZ) is organised jointly by the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, IASSIDD Special Interest Research Group (SIRG) on Comparative Policy and Practice and SPMP, an association of people with intellectual disabilities as part of the QUALI-TYDES Czech Research Foundation project.
This conference aims to explore ways of bringing together different actors in order to work towards deinstitutionalisation and the development of community based services. This is in line with Article 19 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which states that all persons with disabilities have an equal right to live in the community. It further calls on State Parties States "to take effective and appropriate measures to facilitate full enjoyment by persons with disabilities of this right by ensuring that they have the opportunity to choose their place of residence and where and with whom they live on an equal basis with others.”
Representatives at this conference will include self-advocates, academics and legal and policy experts, representatives from local, regional and national government, directors of Institutions and NGOs and representatives from the Media. These representatives will participate both as contributors and delegates.
The conference will explore examples of good practice and will also seek ways of ensuring user involvement in influencing policy and practice. Furthermore, it will look at creative solutions to ensure persons with disabilities can live in the community.
The event will be followed by a Comparative and Policy Special Interest Research group roundtable on Saturday 16th November. The main aim of this meeting will be to finalise the content of the papers for the Special Issue on Policies for a Good Life in the Community and to discuss future activities of the SIRG.
The purpose of the QUALI-TYDES project is to investigate and explain how new developments in global, European and national local policies are impacting on the lives of young adults with disabilities in several European countries. By combining life stories with critical policy analysis, the project aims to generate policy-relevant knowledge that is based on the experiences and aspirations of young persons with disabilities.
