Including disability in post-2015 development goals: online consultation open until 28 March
Mar, 19/03/2013
The World We Want online consultation is co-organized by The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and UNICEF in order to discuss issues such as disability in the post-2015 development framework.
In 2000, world leaders promised to halve extreme poverty by 2015 with a global plan called the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Thanks to millions of people taking action and a massive global effort, the number of people living in poverty has fallen to less than half of its 1990 level.
The World We Want online consultation will gather the priorities of people from every corner of the world and help build a collective vision that will be used directly by the United Nations and World Leaders to plan a new development agenda launching in 2015, one that is based on the aspirations of all citizens!
This new consultation builds on the online discussion on ‘Addressing Inequalities and Persons with Disabilities in the Post-2015 development agenda’ which took place in November 2012 as can be read on the e-include.eu website. The discussion highlighted the need to combat discrimination and also the importance of promoting full inclusion of persons with disabilities in all areas of decision-making.
The online consultations taking place in March further seek to identify the specific measures which need to be taken by different stakeholders in order to promote a disability-inclusive society worldwide.
The online consultations are part of the preparatory process for the United Nations General Assembly High-level Meeting on Disability and Development which will take place on 23 September 2013. The main theme behind this meeting is: “The way forward: a disability inclusive development agenda towards 2015 and beyond”. The meeting will also include two informal interactive round tables, consisting of Member States, representatives of the United Nations, as well as representatives of civil society and organizations of persons with disabilities.
The high-level meeting will result in an action-oriented Outcome Document in support of the aims of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the realization of the Millennium Development Goals. The recommendations which emerge from the online consultation will be incorporated into a report to inform this outcome document.
