On 10 - 11 April 2014, the International Conference “Voices from the North: Calling for Inclusion in Education” will be held at the University of Lapland, in Rovaniemi, Finland.
The conference is a part of the research and development project “A School for All: Development of Inclusive Education”. The project aims at developing inclusion in schools and teacher education through school-based development work and research, with a particular focus on learners who are vulnerable to exclusion.
The conference gathers together researchers, administrators and practitioners involved in developing inclusion in their work. We welcome e.g. all
- researchers and teacher educators from Nordic countries and Europe
- teachers from northern Finland and North-West Russia
- municipalities, school administrators, national board of education (Finland)
- ministries of education and culture
The conference addresses three thematic areas:
1. Whose inclusive education? In this theme different understandings of the concept of inclusive education and values related to inclusion in education will be debated. Perspectives to the debate may come from different approaches to inclusive education.
2. (Teacher) education for inclusion. This theme focuses on theoretical approaches and practical examples, as well as administrative issues, of addressing and responding to diversity in sites of education across educational levels.
3. Working towards inclusive schools. This theme is explored through experiences in schools.
The two-day conference addresses inclusive education from theoretical and practical points of view: Thursday programme is directed particularly to researchers and administrators and Friday programme for schools and teachers. Both conference days will be opened with a keynote speech, followed by research paper sessions and practical workshops. On Thursday there will also be a panel discussion on educational support for learners in the context of northern Finland - this panel will be only in Finnish.
Keynote speeches will be given by Professor Lani Florian, Bell Chair of Education, Moray House School of Education, University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom and Dr Tarja Seppälä-Pänkäläinen, a school principal whose mission is to enhance school staff competencies in responding to learner diversity.
