I am interested in researching education policy both in national and international contexts and also the role of policy in reducing inequalities, especially among vulnerable children and young people.

Emma Smith joined the School of Education in August 2012 from the University of Birmingham where she was Professor of Education and Social Justice. Following a career as a Chemistry teacher and Head of Special Educational Needs in the South Wales valleys, Emma left teaching and joined academia upon completion of her PhD in late 2002. Emma has held academic and research posts at Cardiff University, and the Universities of York and Birmingham.
Emma teaches research methods on a number of postgraduate level programmes within the School of Education, and supervises doctoral and masters students who are interested in researching topics in the field of education policy and inequality.
