On 25 October 2013, Inclusion Europe is organising a policy seminar 'Strategies towards an effective implementation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities'. The event will bring together leaders of the inclusion movement and renowned experts to discuss outstanding challenges in ensuring equal rights and full inclusion of persons with disabilites in society as outlined in the international treaty.
The EU concluded the UNCRPD in 2010 and most Member States have now ratified it, or are close to ratification. In monitoring the implementation of its provisions, a key challenge identified by Inclusion Europe’s members is the identification of evidence concerning states’ progress on disability policies and their impact on disabled people.
This seminar will provide opportunities for exchange of views on policy changes and legal reform necessary to enforce the provisions of the UN Convention. In the context of financial crisis and the omnipresent austerity measures, participants will discuss how to challenge the argument of the lack of resources and investment in key areas for people with intellectual disabilities such as education and access to rights.
The role of self-advocates and family members in the implementation of the UNCRPD and the monitoring process will be examined, while participants will also get the opportunity to share good practice examples of effective and meaningful participation
Finally, the event will include a discussion on mainstreaming the CRPD in national and European policies, showcasing good practices in different areas such as development cooperation, transport policies, housing and schooling.
The full-day event will take place in Brussels. Registration for the event will open soon.
