SCIENCE DAY 14.3.2012 - UNIVERSITY OF JYVÄSKYLÄ HAS SUBJECTS TO TELL YOUR BRAIN
On Wednesday March 14, 2012 University of Jyväskylä was celebrating The International Brain Week. University had at Agora Center Science Day, which theme was “University has subjects to tell your brain”. The Science Day offered information, experiences and new insights into the science and research for all ages and was open to all people interested in science. The events were free of charge. During the event there were open lectures which subjects were ranging from the brain and driving, reading and writing difficulties to intelligent molecules and music in the brain.
Science Day had been organized different kind of task and testing points that were particularly open for upper primary school (grades 6 – 9) and for upper secondary school students (grades 10 – 12). Those school classes should also sign up to organizers in advance. In Agora Center were more than 300 school students testing their skills in driving simulator, considering how a lie detector is operating, and testing their competence to understand language at language-related task crosses.
At the lobby of Agora there was on display of the brain-related research. Department of Psychology of Agora Center, The Open University and Summer University shared information about lifelong learning. Kokkola University Consortium presented their research. “Motoriikka Miikka”, (Motor Function Miikka), The Finnish Talent winner 2009, had his music and song-rich show at Agora lobby.
At Agora Center's lobby different neurological disability organizations had their presentation points, tables. The representatives of those organizations told about neurolocigal diseases, rehabilitation and care. During the Science day there was also opportunity to experience totally dark cafe, Pime Café. In the café was offered coffee, tea or juice and a small mouthful, and a unique experience the difference, that all for voluntary payment. In a cafe were blind people acting as waiters and guides. Pitch-black cafe offers a slice of sounds, touch, smells and tastes of the world to visitors, who can see. The Café was open from 10 to 15. It was organized by Central Finland Association of the Visually Impaired in collaboration with University of Jyväskylä.
On Radio Central Finland was Science Day program throughout the day. The Science Day culmination was Ask the Proff program from 16.15 to 17.00. Listeners were able to call during the program, and to present a live broadcast of questions and comments to the brain-related topics. They also could sent questions online at www.radiokeskisuomi.fi.
