Smart Home Jyväskylä is an environment operated by JAMK University of Applied Sciences. It can be used for developing, learning and testing solutions for safe living. It’s an accessible and safe home of the future, a place that will enable elderly or disabled people to live independently and more inclusive among other people than is presently possible.
The Smart Home built by and operated by JAMK University of Applied of Applied Sciences is a place, where smart, modern technology is harnessed to support quality living: When you walk past the waste bin, it opens automatically. In the bedroom there is a smart bed equipped with sensors and in the toilet a bidet with wash and dry functions. In the kitchen the height and depth on the cupboard can be adjusted by pushing a button. The dishwasher and refrigerator are both housed in the kitchen cabinets. When you leave this home, your key will warn you, if you’ve forgotten to switch the cooker off.
At The Smart Home there are also different kind of smaller but useful assistive products, such as spoons, forks and knives, which handles are easy to bend if necessary. There are chairs and seats higher than standard, so visitors can get new ideas. The Smart Home is not used only by students but also by companies. It provides a learning environment, but it also gives new business opportunities to companies. In that place companies are able to test their new solutions and innovations to serve their clients better. The Smart Home is also a meeting place. It can be used for companies to undertake multi-professional collaborative projects with potential employees.
The Smart Home offers students a great facility for practical training and a place to meet people from companies and experts from different areas. It gives students a chance to develop their own professional identity. At the Smart Home they can get information about disability aids and practice in using them. They learn more about accessibility and the opportunities it provides. They can meet clients in a realistic environment. Each week there is an open day hosted by JAMK students, when anyone can visit the Smart Home. It was opened in autumn 2011, when it attracted attention both nationally and internationally.
